Why Do People Adopt Adults
In a single year all large cities of Texas will see approximately 150 adult adoptions take place. The reasons for adult adoption are:
- Adult adoption formalizes a stepparent relationship as the parent of their child. This means that even a new birth certificate issues to the child showing the adoptive parent as their official parent. For legacy reasons such as the person’s obituary this point can be significant.
- Formalizing a parent-child relationship ensures that certain types of assets will pass to the child from the adult even if the adult passes away without a will. Conversely if a stepchild is not adopted and there is no will, and an adult dies even with a very close relationship to that child, the child will not inherit any part of the estate.
- An adult child that has special needs may require adult adoption to help ensure the adult is able to claim the child as a dependent into adulthood.
